It’s not every day that we do double-takes whenever a new smartphone comes along. With the Honor Play, it wasn’t the display that popped out and made us take notice; it was what was inside that took us pleasantly by surprise.

Before we dive down, check out the specs:

6.3 inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors
1080 x 2340 pixels, 19.5:9 ratio (~409 ppi density)
Hisilicon Kirin 970 chipset
Octa-core (4×2.4 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4×1.8 GHz Cortex-A53) CPU
Mali-G72 MP12 GPU
64 GB, 4GB RAM
Android 8.1 (Oreo)
microSD, up to 256 GB
16MP f/2.2, PDAF + 2 MP, f/2.4, depth sensor rear camera
16 MP, f/2.0, 2.0µm front camera
Non-removable Li-Po 3750 mAh battery

What you may have first noticed about this particular smartphone is the large screen. It’s touted for gaming after all, so it better have a lot of real estate for the game you’re playing. Probably one of the best features of this phone and what makes the Honor Play built for gaming is in the hardware: a Kirin 970 chipset with an octa-core CPU and a Mali-G72 GPU with 4GB RAM. If you’re wondering, the Kirin 970 chipset is also found in the Mate 10 and the P20, both flagship-class smartphones.

It doesn’t stop there. The Honor Play also comes with the GPU Turbo technology which, when paired with the latest Huawei chipset, boosts gaming performance and GPU processing, improving graphics
processing efficiency by 60% and reducing SoC (System on Chip) energy consumption by 30%.

To further enhance gaming, the Honor Play also features AI 4D Smart Shock, which allows the phone directional vibration, which is useful when playing shooter games. The directional vibration gives you an indication of where enemies are, direction of gunfire, and even the feeling of recoil when firing weapons. The device also supports 3D surround sound both on earphones and headphones.

Rounding it all out is the 3,750mAh battery, a mainstay size for phones geared towards gaming, allowing you to play untethered to a wall plug or power bank for longer.

Of course, Huawei and its brands are known for taking great snapshots, with or without the Leica technology on the cameras. The Honor Play has a 16MP + 2MP AI-assisted rear shooter combo with image stabilization, allowing the phone to learn scenarios and adjusting color blending to suit the photo. It also has a 16MP front camera for gamers who also like to take the occasional selfie or groufie.

For the price of PHP15,990, the Honor Play is by all means a contender in the midrange price category of smartphones. However, the flagship-class specs make this phone one of the cheapest flagships ever released in the Philippine market!

You can pre-order the Honor Play during the Game With The Brave event at SM City Fairview on August 11, 2018. The phone is set for online purchase on August 13, 2018 at the Honor Online Stores at Lazada and Shopee.
