Graphics Processing Units or GPUs have grown to be a buzzword in the mainstream thanks to cryptocurrency mining (using the processing power of graphics cards to “mine” for bitcoin or other currency) but before they were tasked with that job, these pieces of hardware ensured your games (and other graphic-intensive tasks) became visual treats for your eyes.
NVIDIA, one of the leading graphics card manufacturers, broke their silence and put all the rumors to rest with the announcement of their newest line of GPUs. The RTX Series: the 2070, the 2080, and the 2080Ti. Boasting Turing architechture – named after Alan Turing, the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence – that puts its performance widely ahead of its predecessor the GTX 10 Series, the RTX video cards can perform real-time ray tracing fused with AI learning in order to produce more fluid graphics in motion than ever before.
Ray tracing is the simulation of how light behaves. Depending on the surface of an object, light can either bounce off, get absorbed, or pass through. For years, ray tracing has been tedious work but very important when it comes to the production of graphics, no matter if the final product or game is hyper-realistic or cartoony. This all changes with the RTX series’ real-time ray tracing innovation.
Simply put: if you think today’s games look really good, playing games made with the RTX GPUs in mind is going to be even better.
To round out NVIDIA’s announcement, the new 20 series cards can be overclocked further, contain 13-blade dual fans, a full card vapor chamber, an enhanced DisplayPort 1.4a with DSC to allows a single connector to drive an 8K monitor at 60Hz, and an aluminum shell for lightweight rigidity.
The NVIDIA RTX series’s Founders Edition versions of the graphics cards are now open for pre-order starting at USD 599 and will be available by September 2018. And yes, NVIDIA will be selling the cards through its partners: ASUS, Colorful, EVGA, Gainward, Galaxy, Gigabyte, Innovision 3D, MSI, Palit, PNY, and Zotac.
RTX 2070 Founders Edition : USD 599
RTX 2080 Founders Edition: USD 799
RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edition: USD 1,199
