It’s been a long time, but it’s time to say “Hello, moto” again as motorola returns to the Philippine smartphone market with two new offerings: the modernized Razr 5G and the moto G 5G Plus.
The motorola Razr 5G
The newest incarnation of the Razr clamshell phone is looking very much improved from its earlier counterpart. While the new Razr was announced in 2019, it was only made available in certain countries in February of this year. Within just a few months, we now have the Razr 5G which is not merely a 5G-capable version of the motorola Razr. Check out the specs:
6.2 inches main display, 876 x 2142 pixels at 373ppi
2.7 inches external G-OLED display, 600 x 800 pixels
Android 10
Qualcomm SDM765 Snapdragon 765G
Octa-core processor (1×2.4 GHz Kryo 475 Prime & 1×2.2 GHz Kryo 475 Gold & 6×1.8 GHz Kryo 475 Silver)
Adreno 620 GPU
256GB storage
8GB RAM
48 MP, f/1.7, 26mm (wide), 1/2.0″, PDAF, OIS main camera
20 MP, f/2.2, (wide), selfie camera
2800 mAh Li-po battery
Fast charging 15W
While the Razr 5G features new-school tech, there are still several features about it that harken back to the years when smartphones were still an emerging device. Not too long ago, smartphones had only two cameras: one at the back and one at the front. Since the Razr 5G folds, its rear camera is also its selfie camera when closed. However, when you flip it open, you still have a front-facing camera for more traditionally-taken selfies.
The nowadays, 4,000mAh battery packs for smartphones are the norm. Due to its construction however, the Razr 5G takes a page from 2014-era smartphones with its 2,800mAh battery. motorola makes up for this deficit by having the Razr feature a 15W fast-charging capability, allowing you to quickly juice up the phone should it ever redline when in use.
The big update is the look and the materials its made. motorola decided to improve the look of the Razr 5G to make it visually and mechanically stand apart from its February 2020 sibling. The Razr 5G is more angled, with Gorilla Glass 6 on the non-touchscreen panels for durability.
The folded screen’s functionality has also been improved thanks to Android 10’s gesture controls. You can swipe in different directions to launch different functions as well as customize what widgets or apps the front screen will display.
The moto G 5G Plus
motorola’s midrange smartphone offering comes with 5G connectivity, similar to how other brands are packing their similarly-tiered devices. At a price tag of just Php 16,990, the moto G 5G Plus comes with a few features that allow it to be a top-of-mind choice for buyers who want to have a new device without dipping too much into the bank account.
6.7 inches, 1080 x 2520 pixels, 21:9 ratio, 409ppi
Android 10
Qualcomm SDM765 Snapdragon 765
Octa-core (1×2.3 GHz Kryo 475 Prime & 1×2.2 GHz Kryo 475 Gold & 6×1.8 GHz Kryo 475 Silver)
Adreno 620 GPU
128GB storage
8GB RAM
48 MP, f/1.7, 26mm (wide), 8 MP, f/2.2, 118˚ (ultrawide), 5 MP, f/2.2, (macro), 2 MP, f/2.2, (depth) quad rear cameras
16 MP, f/2.0, (wide), 8 MP, f/2.2, (ultrawide) dual front cameras
5000 mAh Li-po battery
Fast charging 20W
Notable in the moto G 5G Plus are the SIX cameras that come with it; four at the back and two at the front. That’s a lot of photography power for a midranger. You can also toggle between 60Hz and 90Hz on the display. Using it at 90Hz will result in a smoother visual experience when navigating the phone and playing games, but you can easily dial it back down to 60Hz to conserve battery life.
Also note that the phone comes with 8GB of RAM, a bit above average in the RAM department which makes this phone very capable of running the more demanding apps, especially games.
Both the motorola razr 5G and moto g 5G plus will be available in the Philippines in December 2020 in all major electronics stores and authorized Lenovo resellers. The motorola razr 5G can be availed for Php 72,990, while the 8GB RAM variant of the moto g 5G plus will retail at PHP 16,990.
