Nothing has just revealed an innovative take on smartphone development with their first-ever community-created device. The Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition represents a unique collaboration between Nothing’s design team and their most creative community members, resulting in a distinctive glow-in-the-dark smartphone.

The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus: A Community-Driven Initiative

The Community Edition Project saw an impressive response with over 900 submissions from 47 countries worldwide. After careful consideration, Nothing selected four winners who worked directly with their London-based teams to bring their creative visions to life.

The development process was divided into four key stages, each led by different community creators:

Hardware Design

Astrid Vanhuyse and Kenta Akasaki collaborated with Nothing’s Design Director Adam Bates and CMF Designer Lucy Birley to develop the phone’s standout feature – a phosphorescent back panel. This innovative design allows the phone to emit a gentle glow in dark environments without requiring any power source. The glow naturally recharges in daylight, creating a sustainable and visually striking effect.

Wallpaper Collection

Digital artist Andrés Mateos worked alongside Nothing’s Software Design Director Mladen M Hoyss and Software Designer Ken Giang to create the “Connected Collection.” What began as a four-wallpaper project evolved into a comprehensive collection of six unique designs, combining AI-powered tools with traditional digital design techniques.

Packaging Innovation

Ian Henry Simmonds brought minimalist elegance to the packaging with his “Less is More” concept. The final design features bold graphics and reflective elements that complement the phone’s glow-in-the-dark capabilities, creating a cohesive unboxing experience.

Marketing Vision

The final piece came together under Sonya Palma’s direction with the campaign “Find your light. Capture your light.” Working with Nothing’s Creative Team, Palma developed a comprehensive marketing strategy including film content and digital assets that echo the brand’s inaugural “pure instinct” campaign theme.

Community at the Core

This project represents more than just a limited edition smartphone – it’s a testament to Nothing’s commitment to community engagement. The company has been actively involving community members in software development and content creation, even introducing a Community Board Observer position to represent user interests at board-level discussions.

Availability in the Philippines

For Filipino tech enthusiasts, the Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition will be available in very limited quantities. Only 25 units from the global production run of 1,000 pieces will reach our shores.
